There are a lot of great Paleo and low-carb podcasts out there on the Aethernets, and a lot of us get a great deal of our information from them. Let's face it - the mainstream media isn't so great (though getting better) about covering the latest in real science at the level to which we've become accustomed with such great blog and podcast content as we have in our community.
But because there's a lot of content to cover, it can't always be addressed as the mainstream media would like to cover it: sound bites and easy-to-swallow portions. Like the meat and veggies we all love so much, Paleo podcasts have to be chewed and swallowed to get all the relevant information across, and that takes some time. If you're strapped for time like I frequently am, and want to catch up on some of the great offerings that our community has to offer, then I'll recommend you listen to Latest in Paleo, by Angelo Coppola.
But as you'll find out, that's hardly the only reason to listen to Angelo.
Latest in Paleo is a news-magazine type podcast each week that highlights some of the best news and information that the mainstream media and Paleo community have to offer.
Angelo breaks each episode up into four sections:
Angelo's commentary on the various articles is fantastic. He does a wonderful job of being pro-Paleo without being nasty (which some of us, myself included, frequently have a hard time doing) when reporting on the stuff that is obviously wrong. He's not afraid to be critical when the material warrants it. He includes clips and posts from people who he doesn't agree with completely, but feels that they add something of value.
And he's well-spoken and clear in everything he does - even when he had a technical glitch in his podcast during South-By-SouthWest earlier this year and had to work with an iPhone earbuds/microphone combo instead of the set he'd expected to use, he didn't let the quality of the material suffer at all.
The absolute best thing about the podcast, though, is the Moment of Paleo section at the end of the show. Angelo has a gift for seeing past a lot of the surface stuff about Paleo and getting into the nitty-gritty of the lifestyle in a way that connects the scientist, the athlete, the health nut, and the personal development junkie nicely. Before I listened to "Latest in Paleo," I never really took the time to look at the why's of my Paleo lifestyle, but Angelo really gets you thinking about various facets of the Paleo lifestyle in new ways.
That's really the most valuable thing about the show - figuring out why we do things and being able to use those realizations well can only help us as we strive to recreate ourselves in a way that emulates our ancestors and pushes us to achieve more in our lives. Understanding the science of the Paleo lifestyle is certainly important for getting our logic and rationality-driven left brains to jibe with the creative and more emotional right brains. But at the same time, the right brain needs to feel positive about all the changes and paradigms that the left brain can more easily accept because of that science. Both our emotional and our logic centers need to be fed to thrive, not just survive (as our bodies are doing with a Paleo lifestyle), and this podcast delivers that buy-in consistently.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I was never able to stay on a "low carb" diet because I did not understand why I was doing it. Paleo IS so much more than that. The show notes are amazingly helpful for more research. My health is steadily improving. I see some grat stuff here on your blog to..I'm going to explore. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lynn. Left-brain (logic center) buy-in is so important for any change we want to manifest in our lives, and coupling that with strong right-brain (emotional center) buy-in makes it a shoe-in for success.
